You Were Not Born to Merely Survive

The prophet Jeremiah was not a confident man. When God called him, he told God that he spoke poorly, was too young, and was unsure. Jeremiah focused on his limitations.

I have felt this deeply in my life. I had a stroke 25 years ago, and I still often struggle with feeling inadequate. After the stroke, my life changed completely. For many months, I could actually sing songs. In hindsight, that was quite remarkable, but I couldn’t talk or write correctly or do math in my head. Most of the time, I knew what I wanted to say in my mind, but I couldn’t actually say it. I primarily had to relearn. It was certainly humbling.

God’s answer to Jeremiah reshapes everything:
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born, I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

God knew him—personally, precisely, and relationally—before he existed. Jeremiah’s identity wasn’t formed by his circumstances, abilities, or age. It was established by God before any of those things became part of his story.

You were not an afterthought. You are not a mistake that God decided to work with later. You were not born to merely survive. You were truly born into a relationship that existed before you, with a love that spoke your name before you had one. You were not created to occupy space in the universe.

You are meant to carry a holy and beloved identity, living out God’s love and truth.

God made you out of love, for love, and toward love.

We bear the image of God in a world that desperately needs to encounter it. It’s not just poetic sentiment; it’s your created purpose. 🤍

Heavenly Father,
I praise You as the Creator who intentionally formed me with purpose. When fear, shame, and sorrow threaten to overwhelm me, I reveal all my doubts. Yet, I thank You for shaping me in Your likeness and speaking words of love over me.

Please restore my confidence in Your divine purpose, heal my wounds, and guide me to reflect Your goodness vividly.

May Your love define who I am more than my struggles ever could.
